Beverly Bishop

Beverly Jean Bishop, 81, of Ipswich, formerly of Wakefield died Friday June 5, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

Born in Wakefield May 23, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mildred (Mellett) Bishop.

Ms. Bishop graduated from Wakefield High School in 1946, and she was the salutatorian of her class. She retired from New England Met Life Insurance Co., Boston, MA in 1988, after more than 40 years of faithful service.

Beverly traveled extensively with her free-lance photographer Uncle, Alfred Mellett, for 7 months in 1970 in India, Napal, Afghanistan, and Africa. She also went to Australia on a wallaby conservation program.

She loved gardening and spent many wonderful years helping her grandfather, Arthur Mellett, in his greenhouse located on Vernon St., in Wakefield.

She also was a volunteer for 7 years, taking care of the flower beds and greenhouse plants at the Sea View Retreat Retirement Extended Care Community in Rowley, MA. Her tireless dedication was evident in the condition of all the plants and lovely flowerbeds which added much to the atmosphere at Seaview. Her interest in flowers also won her a first prize at the Topsfield Fair in 1993 for her house plant exhibition.

Beverly was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Wakefield while growing up. Later in life she was a member of the La Salatte Faith Community in Ipswich, MA., where she sang in the choir.

She was involved in the Foreign Student Exchange Program and was responsible for seeking out hosts to make it possible for these students to attend the High School in Ipswich and other North Shore towns.
The following quote from Beverly was in the newspaper:
"It's something I believe in because I feel that the more you come into contact with people from other countries, the more you see, accept and respect their differences. Then more harmony and good can come into the world."

Ms. Bishop was the sister of Stephen Bishop of Reading and Doris Rufo of Wakefield and the late Lois Drinon. She is also survived by her nieces Elaine Stonkus of Lynn, Christine Schweizer of Avon, CT and her nephew Paul Carter of Ft. Angeles, WA.

A funeral service will be held Thursday in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, corner of Main and Bryant St., Wakefield at 11am. There are no calling hours. Interment Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the Mass Audubon Society, 208 Great Rd., Lincoln, MA 01773.
