John Hughes

John J. Hughes, 90, of Chelmsford and a former long time Stoneham resident died Wednesday June 6 at the Lowell General Hospital.

Born in Malden on November 27, 1921 the son of the late Thomas J. & Mary (Kelly) Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School. He was a retired supervisor for Mass Electric. Mr. Hughes was a decorated World War II Army veteran and had participated in D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach. He served as a Sergeant and was a P.O.W. He received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement during the invasion. He was a member of the Stoneham Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Hughes was the husband of the late Esther May (Smith) Hughes. He is survived by his son Lawrence Hughes and wife Sarah of Dover, PA, his two daughters; Carol Howe and husband James of Middletown, CT and Katherine Calnan and husband Brian of Londonderry, NH and his brother William Hughes of Malden. Mr. Hughes is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his two brothers; Thomas Hughes and Michael Hughes and his two sisters; Cecelia Fleming and Mary Cahill.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham on Monday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St, Stoneham at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 1-4pm. Interment will be at Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham.
