Alfred Michael Donovan M.D., 90, of Lynnfield and Gloucester died on Monday, March 21 at the Sunrise of Lynnfield.
Born in Boston on August 21, 1920 he was the son of the late Charles S. and Elizabeth (Murphy) Donovan.
Dr. Donovan was a graduate of Boston English High School, Boston College, and Tufts University Medical School. He served as Lieutenant JG in the U.S. Navy during and after World War II. He completed his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital and Boston VA Hospital.
Dr. Donovan ran a private practice of internal medicine in Wakefield from 1952 to 1998 and was the founder of Wakefield Medical Associates. He served on the medical staffs of Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Malden Hospital and served as President of the Medical Staff at both hospitals, Library Committee of Notre Dame University, Lynnfield Conservation Commission and served as Chairman in 1996 and also American Field Service in Lynnfield.
He was a member of the President's Circle of Boston College, The Knights of Malta, The Wingaersheek Yacht Club of Gloucester, Lynnfield Historical Society, Friends of Harvard Celtic Studies and he and his wife were honored as Celtic Couple of the Year, 2003.
A compassionate physician, his thoughtfulness and sense of humor endeared him to all he met. His inquisitive mind, depth of knowledge, and devotion for family inspired many. He enjoyed collecting antiques and books, preserving a colonial home, the Boston Symphony, and hiking in
the mountains with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maureen H (Murphy) Donovan and their eleven children; Maureen Donovan (James Bartholomew) of Columbus, OH, Charles S. Donovan (Doreen Shew) of Piedmont CA; Lea Watson (James) of Gloucester; Edward D. Donovan, M.D. of Hollis, NH, Grant Donovan (Ellen) of Salt Lake City, UT, Denault Donovan (Sharon) of Lynnfield, Oren Paulin (Justin) of Manchester, CT, Shauna Donovan of Lynnfield, Ailis Kiernan (Richard Cleggett) of Milton, Tara Canellas (Christopher)of Weston, FL, and Simon Donovan (Monica) of San Francisco, CA; His grandchildren, Thomas Bartholomew; Yvette, Martine, and Neal Donovan; Keara, Alexander, and Fraser Watson; Hannah and Jules Donovan; Michael and Selena Donovan, Elizabeth Paulin, Brianan, Danya, and Mairead Kiernan, Katie, Richard, and Dylan Cleggett; Andre, Mia, and Natalie Canellas; Declan and Dashiell Donovan; and all the patients who were such an important part of his life. He was predeceased by his sisters, Marilyn Ellison and Elizabeth Flaherty.
His family will be forever grateful to the staff of Sunrise of Lynnfield and Hospice who provided wonderful support to Dr. Donovan during his struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Maria Goretti Church, Lynnfield at 10 o'clock. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Lynnfield.
