Ann A. Murfitt, age 61, of Wakefield, died at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading, Massachusetts surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 4, 2009.
Born March 17, 1948, in Lindsborg, Kansas, to Wilma (Nelson) Larson and Hiram Larson, she graduated from Washburn University and obtained her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut.
She lived in several different places in the Midwest before settling in Massachusetts. She pursued her career of helping others through a diverse group of organizations including Kolburne School, a residential school for troubled youths; the Massachusetts Hospital School, serving young adults with severe disabilities; Sunbridge Healthcare, a long-term care facility for patients with Huntington's disease; and, HCR Manorcare where she served as National Manager of Social Services.
Ann was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, American Health Care Association, the American Geriatric Association and the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA). In her effort to continually improve the quality of care to a broad range of patients, she served on many panels and committees, but it was her work with Huntington's patients that was of special importance to her. Ann was a presenter at the HDSA National Convention and her work on standards of care for patients with Huntington's disease was published in 1999.
Ann was a loving Mother, a compassionate friend, and an advocate for the underprivileged. She will be especially remembered for her sincere words of encouragement, her unwavering optimism and her deep empathy for others.
Ann was the proud mother of Erin Murfitt of Wakefield, MA and Tasha Mahoney and husband Tim of North Reading, MA. Daughter of Wilma (Nelson) Larson of Lindsborg, KS and the late Hiram Larson. Sister of Merle Larson and wife, Lesa, of TN; Willis Larson and wife, Lois, of KS; and, Mary Murfitt and wife, Bonnie Hundt, of NY.
