Arthur Lamb

Arthur W. Lamb , 79, beloved husband of Joyce (Moran) Lamb , passed away peacefully on Monday, September 17th, 2012, at Kaplan Family Hospice House, in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family.

Born, raised, and educated in Boston, MA, Arthur was the son of the late Mary (McLean) Lamb of Dorchester, MA, and the late Royal Douglas Lamb of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Arthur and his wife Joyce were married for over 34 years and made their home in Wakefield, MA, where he was a communicant of St. Florence Church. Arthur was an avid fisherman and yachtsman. He greatly enjoyed traveling with his wife to such venues as the Caribbean Islands, Bermuda, Alaska, and Ireland.

Arthur was honorably discharged after proudly serving for four years in the US Navy during the Korean War; this included a yearlong World Tour on the USS Tawara. Years later he would become an officer in the Massachusetts State Guard where he earned the rank of Colonel and was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Ancient and Honorable Artillery, Boston.

Arthur served as Police Officer as well as Training Consultant in law enforcement curriculum with the Boston Police Department for 32 years. Over the years, using both traditional and his own methods, he certified law enforcement officers, both local and national, as instructors; was Assistant Director at the Recruit Training Academy at the Wakefield and Topsfield Academies; and was Principal Instructor standardizing the Basic Recruit Academy Self-Defense Training Program for the Mass. Criminal Justice Training Council. He was also an expert witness in civil liability at both the State and Federal levels. Arthur's numerous and ever-grateful students will fondly remember his disciplined but fun-loving approach to learning. The face of law enforcement has been indelibly marked by his expertise.

During his career, his accomplishments were innovative and numerous. He invented the "Quick Release Police Baton Holster and Stick" manufactured by Smith & Wesson Co., Springfield, MA. He established the policy of the Boston Police Rules & Procedures #304 - Non-Lethal Force. He made the movie "The Lamb Method" of Police Baton Training (Harper & Row Media, copyright 1974). He was responsible for the passing of the New Amendments to Statute Law: Deadly Weapons, Chapter #269 of the Massachusetts General Laws, Section #10 (Kung Fu Sticks, Shuriken, Manrikigusari). He also published The Lamb Method of Baton Training, copyright 1970, and The Lamb Method of Report Writing (Workbook and The Instructor's Manual), copyright 1987, which have been adopted by police departments and training councils nationally and internationally.

After his retirement, Mr. Lamb served as Security Officer at Barnes Federal Building in Boston, the JFK Library in Dorchester, and the NARA Archives in Waltham. He also continued to serve as Boston Red Sox Security Consultant on civil liability.

His professional associations include (ASIS) American Society for Industrial Security, (ASLET) American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, Mass. Chiefs' Police Assn. (assoc. member), Mass. Police Training Officers' Assn., Boston Police Patrolman's Assn., Inc., and Retired Boston Police Officers' Assn. His social affiliations include Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #642, Saugus; Pleasant Park Yacht Club, Winthrop, (past Commodore 2001-2002); Commodore's Club of America; and Crystal Community Club, Wakefield.

Along with his beloved wife Joyce, he is also survived by his cherished daughters Judith Lamb and husband Paul Choudhury of Franklin, Maureen and husband William Gullifa of Raymond, NH, and Deborah Lamb and husband Robert Chuisa of Reading, treasured grandchildren Patrick, Clare, and Katie Choudhury, Levi Gullifa, Aaron Lamb , Andrew, Joseph, Michael and Jane Chuisa, as well his former wife Barbara (Leonard) Lamb . He also leaves a brother Donald Lamb and his wife Mary of Roslindale, a sister Doris ( Lamb ) and husband Francis McHowell of Hyde Park, a sister-in-law Lois Lamb of Medfield; also a brother-in-law Charles and wife Dianne Moran, and sisters-in-law Kathleen (Moran) Mulhall, and Eileen (Moran) and husband J. Michael Earle, many special nieces and nephews, a lifelong friend Thomas DeCourcy, and the Over-the-Hill Gang at Pleasant Park Yacht Club, Winthrop. We will forever recall laughter-filled gatherings of family and friends at his home and Boston Harbor on his boat being entertained with his endless supply of life stories and jokes. Arthur will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, loving nature, and keen wit.

He was predeceased by his sister Mary ( Lamb ) Owings, brothers Royal, John, Edward, and Robert Lamb and brother-in-law Charles P. Mulhall.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Florence, Church 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
