August "Gus" Surette, 90, of Wakefield formerly of Saugus, died Sunday, September 8 at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington.
Born in Nova Scotia, Canada on January 21, 1923 he was the son of the late Andrew and Hortense Surette.
Gus had moved to the United States from Canada at the age of 19, later serving in the Army during World War II. He had been a Wakefield resident for more than 30 years. Gus was a retired sheet metal worker and welder for Pier Sheet Metal of Boston and later served as a much loved Sexton at the Emmanual Episcopal Church in Wakefield for 25 years. He was a member of the French Club in Waltham and the American Legion in Saugus.
Gus was the husband of Laurette (Muise) Gallant Surette and the late Georgine L. Surette. He was the father of Raymond A. and wife Diane of Peabody formerly of Saugus. He was the stepfather of Ellen Gallant of Reading, Philip Gallant of Leominster, and Lois Gallant of Mattapoisett. Brother of Lucy Doucette, Marie Nobel and Gustave Surette all of Canada. Grandfather of Kimberly Pleva, Rachelle Surette and Craig Surette. Step Grandfather of Julie, Anthony, Emily, Benjamin, Sophie and Sam. Great grandfather of Nicholas and Benjamin Pleva. Gus was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
Funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 10:30am followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St, Wakefield at 11:30 am. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
