Charles W. Darcy, 91, formerly of Wakefield, died peacefully at his home in Peabody on Thursday, January 14. Born in Boston on September 18, 1924, he was the son of the late Michael and Ethel (Osgood) Darcy and brother of the late Barbara and Francis Darcy.
Charlie grew up in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston where he was a proud member of the Mohawks along with many boyhood friends with whom he stayed connected throughout his life. He graduated from Mission Hill High School and received his Engineering degree from Northeastern University. A Wakefield resident from 1962 to 2001, Charlie served as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps and continued in the Marine Corps Reserves until retiring with the rank of Colonel. He also worked tirelessly at the General Electric Corporation River Works Plant in Lynn for 32 years. After retirement, Charlie enjoyed many happy years of golf, bowling, tennis and aerobic fitness classes with dear friends.
Beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betty" (Chappelle) Darcy for 67 years, Charlie is also survived by his son Richard Darcy and his wife Anne Marie of MO, his daughter Terri Munson and her husband Bob of Lowell, Sandy Parziale and her husband Paul of CO, Robert Darcy of CA, David Darcy of VA, Maryanne Darcy of No. Andover, John Darcy and his wife Joanne of Wakefield and Nancy Gallant and her husband Rob of Ipswich. He was preceded in death by his son Mark Darcy.
Charlie is also survived by 16 grandchildren - Seth, Ben & Val; Ty, Glen & Taryn; Amy & Michael; Casey & Rachelle; April, Amber & Alex; and Courtney, Mark & Allison - who cherished their "Bumpa" and whom he adored, along with 12 beautiful great-grandchildren.
In addition to being preceded in death by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Charlie is also survived by his loving brother-in-law Willie Chappelle and a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved and who loved their "Uncle Charlie."
Charlie will always be remembered for his kind nature, his quick wit and easy smile and for his generosity.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday, January 22 from 4-8pm. His Funeral will be held from the Funeral Home on Saturday, January 23 at 10am followed by a funeral mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield, at 11am. Interment will follow at Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
In lieu of flowers, it was Charlie's wish that donations be made to the charity of one's choosing in his memory.
