Charles R. "Bob" Johnston, 84, of Wakefield, died at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington on Friday, February 4.
Born in Medford on April 16, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Ruth (Jayes) Johnston.
Mr. Johnston had been a Wakefield resident since 1929 and attended the Wakefield public schools and also a trade school in Malden. After graduation, Bob joined the U.S. Army and served his country during WW II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. After his tour, Mr. Johnston began a long career with the Malden Evening News in 1947, and retired in 1988. Bob had been a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Wakefield and was an avid gardener. He had also been a member of the 25th Topical Lighting Division, the Graphic Communications International Union as well as the Boston Newspaper Printing Pressman Union #3. Bob had been a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Johnston was the husband of 62 years to Barbara (Galenius) Johnston. He was the father of Jane McGrath, Cathy Noble and her husband Bryan all of Wakefield, and Diane R. Paiva-Novellano of Lemoore, CA. Bob was the grandfather of Keri, Brian, Daniel, Michael, Kevin, Kristen, Paul and his wife Diana, and Laura Beth. Step grandfather of Christopher and his wife Paula. He was the great grandfather of Ella, Reese, Lacey, Jason, Abigail, and Gunner. He was the step great grandfather of David and Hayden. Brother of Douglas Johnston of Albans, ME, and the late Charlotte Plummer and Lorraine Rolling. Mr. Johnston is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service will be held at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 5 Bryant St., Wakefield on Tuesday at 11 a.m. A visitation period will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home on Monday 4-8 p.m.
Interment, Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
