Charles R. "Speedy" Messina , Jr . of Stoneham formerly of Somerville, died Tuesday, March 3 at the Bear Hill Nursing Home.
Born in Boston on August 19, 1930 he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Esposito) Messina .
Mr. Messina was a graduate of Charlestown High School and had been a longtime Somerville resident before moving to Stoneham. He had served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Somerville Elks and was a past Commander of the AMVETS. Mr. Messina had worked as a Boston Fire Fighter and had been on the Arson Squad and retired as a Lieutenant from Engine 50. He enjoyed reading and was an avid Boston sports fan. He was a member of St. Patrick Church.
Mr. Messina was the husband of Marion "Connie" (McAfee) Messina . He was the father of John R. Messina and his wife Linda of Wakefield, Nancy Kotzuba and her husband James of Somerville, and Robin T. Foley and her husband John of Reading. He was the brother of Charlene Messina of Medford, Gary Messina of Reading, and John Messina of NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew, Megan, Cameron, Taylor, Emily, Casey, Molly, Kaitlyn, Brandon, and Jill. He was the brother-in-law of Jean Williams of Hanover.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday from 4 to 8pm. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division, 25 Shawmut Road, Canton, MA 02021.
