Charlotte Catherine Harper Green, a longtime Wakefield resident went to Heaven on August 1, 2019 after a period of declining health, she was 96.
Charlotte was born in Wakefield on March 14, 1923, the 6th child of Ira J. and Charlotte E. (Downes) Harper. She loved Wakefield and was happy to spend her entire life in her beloved home town.
Charlotte graduated from the Franklin School, almost across the street from her home, then attended Wakefield High graduating with the class of 1941. She attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Boston. She worked for John Hancock Life Insurance and for New England Telephone as an operator. Later in life she worked part-time at American Mutual Insurance.
She married Henry (Hank) J. Green, Sr. on June 21, 1947. They built a home on New Salem Street where they raised their seven children. Charlotte had a busy life but always had her door open for someone that needed advice or someone just to listen. She was a devout Catholic and the church was a very important part of her life. She encouraged her children to get outside and play and was often seen leading the sleds down Border Street. She loved music and enjoyed singing and listening to her husband's band. She never gossiped or talked behind anyone's back. If someone was sick her cupcakes would be on their way. She would find beauty all around her and in the simple things. She loved everybody! She enjoyed reading and had an incredible memory.
Charlotte and Hank were able to do some traveling during their retirement years: they visited friends in Hawaii and family in Alaska then Germany. They also made trips to Maine and New Hampshire, but Charlotte's heart was always in Wakefield.
Hank and Charlotte ran a little convenience store on Pleasant Street for several years and her customers loved her as a thoughtful and caring lady.
Hank passed away in 1991 and Charlotte moved to Preston Park. She was able to stay in her condo with the help and support of her children and their families.
She was a member of St. Florence's Ladies Sodality, the Red Hat Society, the Montrose PTO and a Twin Club Member.
In her later years Charlotte enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren. She also enjoyed her daily visits to the McCarthy Senior Center; which became a very important part of her life.
She was very proud to be an American and her family suffered greatly during World War II. Three of her brothers served our country and her beloved brother Arthur, a Marine, was killed in action in the Pacific. She was also predeceased by her brothers Stanley, Henry, and her sister, Helen Pendergast. She is survived by her brother Cyril N. Harper and his wife Joan, of Mansfield, MA.
