Demetrius Orphanos

Demetrius George Orphanos, age 97, of Stoneham formerly of Melrose, died October 27, 2020 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Born in Naxos, Greece on December 22, 1922 he was the son of the late George and Stella (Linardos) Orphanos.

Mr. Orphanos was raised and educated in Greece. He had also served in the Greek Army for a time. He attended the University of Athens before his education brought him to Canada where he obtained a PhD from McGill University in Canada and then went on to post doctorate time at MIT. When Mr. Orphanos first settled in Canada he was in Uranium City and later Montreal. It was during his time in Montreal that he met his wife, Toula. The two officially made their home in the states in the mid 1960's - raising their family in Melrose before making their home in Stoneham in 1981. Mr. Orphanos was a chemist by trade; spending his youth as a wine chemist before working for Dupont of Boston as a Nuclear Chemist. Outside of his vocational pursuits, Mr. Orphanos loved his yard, gardening, and planting trees. He also loved his tools and was always working on home projects. He and Toula enjoyed travelling and were able to spend the last 36 summers back in Greece.

He is survived by his beloved wife Panayota "Toula" (Kokotsis) Orphanos; his loving sons: George D. Orphanos and wife Jacqui of Lynnfield and Nick D. Orphanos and wife Elizabeth of Stoneham; his cherished grandchildren: Demi, Lexi, and Ricky Orphanos. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
