Donald "Donny" Flynn passed away peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, on January 5, 2015 after a courageous 18 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Donny was a lifelong resident of Stoneham and a devoted Red Sox fan.
Donny attended St. Patrick Grammar School and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1953. He served in the US Army from 1955-7, as a member of the Military Police, part of the time in Korea.
Donny played baseball at Stoneham High, and played in the Joe Travers Town Baseball team for two years. He was a great admirer of Ted Williams, and enjoyed imitating his mannerism on the field. In 1955 Donny spent a month at the St. Louis Cardinals' Minor League Baseball Training camp in Georgia.
He worked for the Atlantic Gelatin Company (Woburn), before taking a leave to care for his mother for thirteen years. After her death, he joined Winchester Hospital, where he was employed for over 28 years in the environmental services department retiring in 2014.
Donny is survived by his brother, Thomas F. Flynn of Wakefield, and the late Evelyn Barrett and Dorothy MacDonald. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, 18 grand nieces and nephews and many co-workers and friends who loved him very much.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Monday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 5pm. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
