Doreen L. Moore, age 91 of Stoneham, died on Sunday November 3 at the Winchester Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
She was born in Woburn, MA (‘33) grew up in Winchester, MA, attended Winchester High School (‘50), and earned a B.S. in Education from Lowell State Teachers College (‘54). In 1960, she moved her family to 27 High St in Stoneham where she founded Leslie Country Day School and directed the education of three generations until retiring in 2010. Her community activism began with the Eastern Middlesex Mental Health Area Board (‘67) and evolved into 50 years of community service with Stoneham’s Our Place and MELD Center Inc (‘73-’22), Stoneham Council on Aging (‘85-’88), and the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham and Wakefield (‘20-’23).
Doreen’s love of art inspired how she taught herself and her students to paint, sing together, and play music. In later years, her love of art helped MELD to evolve into a financial support network for local theater, senior choruses, community access television, and music programs for rising young musicians.
Doreen leaves her son Michael; her daughter Judi and husband Richard, parents of her grandson, Jonathan, and granddaughter, Kaatje; her son Jonathan and wife Robin; her son-in-law David Cooke, parent of her grandsons James and Stephen. She is also survived by her brother Lewis “Terry” Stowe and his wife Joyce of York, ME, and ten nieces and nephews and their families. Doreen is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Michael John Moore, her daughter, Michele, and her son, Joel. She was the daughter of the late Lewis E. Stowe and Louise (O’Brien) Stowe of Winchester.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main Street., Stoneham on Friday November 15 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Saturday November 16 at 10:00 a.m.
