Dorothy Murphy

Dorothy R. Murphy (Barry), age 88, a longtime Lynnfield resident, died on Saturday, January 11 at the Masconomet Health Care Center in Topsfield.

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy, our mother and friend to all whose lives she touched on.

Dottie was born and raised in Somerville, the daughter of the late John J. and Georgietta (Ryder) Barry, the youngest of 6 children. She married John J. Murphy also of Somerville in 1959 and they completed building their dream home in Lynnfield with the help of family and friends. She lived in the house until she moved to Masconomet Health Center a year and a half ago.

Dot lived a full life as a caring mother, homemaker, clerk at the Lynnfield Village Pharmacy and sales in the fashion sector. Dot entered the workforce after being widowed at a young age, she was a very successful sales woman and prided herself in going the "extra mile" for her customers.

She played the role of mother and father in a time when that wasn't common. Despite those struggles and with fierce determination she always provided a loving and warm home for her children.

Dot's passions; caring for her disabled brother, her home, interior design, fashion, dancing and ice cream. After retirement she delighted in her yearly travel adventures both near and far.

Most of all Dottie loved life, family and friends. She had a trusting kind heart and was eager to lend a hand when needed. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Dottie was the beloved wife of the late John J. Murphy. She was the loving mother of Steven J. Murphy and his wife Karen of Peabody, and Donna M. Jandl. She was the grandmother of William, Zachary, Crystal and Sean. Great-Grandmother of Wilimina and Amis.

Her Funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday, beginning at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Assumption Church, corner of Grove and Salem Sts., at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held on Friday from 4-8pm.
