Edward J . Zagaja , 89, a lifelong Wakefield resident, died at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading on Saturday, February 22nd.
Born in Wakefield on November 22, 1924 he was the son of the late Joseph and Waleria (Gorska) Zagaja .
Mr. Zagaja was a graduate of Wakefield High School. He had served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was acknowledged for his Meritorious performance of duty, after he and his crew contributed to the destruction of an enemy plane and forced others to remain at a distance that resulted in little accuracy in their bombing. He was the former owner of Eddie's Barber Shop on Albion Street and Emerson Street in Wakefield. Mr. Zagaja had also worked for the Wakefield Municipal Light and Gas Department. He had often enjoyed going to the races at both Suffolk Downs and Rockingham. He also enjoyed sitting on his front porch talking with passerbies.
Mr. Zagaja was the husband of Gladys (Ulatowski) Zagaja . He was the father of Ronald Zagaja and his wife Sally of Ipswich, Dianne Hickman and her husband Steve of Castle Rock, CO, and Paul Zagaja and his wife Collette of Wakefield. He was the brother of Zenick Zagaja of Wakefield and the late Emile, Michell and Lottie Zagaya. He was the grandfather of Matthew, Amy, Lori, Lynn, Cindy, and Susan. He is also survived by 6 great grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Thursday, February 27 at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery following the mass. There are no calling hours.
