Eleanor Harris

Eleanor G. Harris, 93, of Wakefield and formerly of Melrose died, Sunday, May 11 in Concord, NC.

Born July 26, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Irma L. (Berry) Berthel.

Eleanor was raised in Melrose and was a graduate of Melrose High School; Class of 1939 and later went on to graduate from Chandler Business School. She had served in the United States Coast Guard during WWII and had also worked at the former American Mutual Insurance Company in Wakefield for 25 years. Eleanor spent her summers with her family, growing up on Little Island Pond in Pelham, NH where she later built her own camp in the 1950's. She was a member of the West Congregational Church in Peabody and was an avid Boston sports fan.

Eleanor was the wife of the late Alfred Harris, Jr. She was the mother of William R. Harris and his wife Esther of Hernando, FL, Carolyn R. Jean and her husband Paul of Concord, NC and Clark S. Harris and his wife Sally of Pembroke, NH. She was the sister of the late Richard, Herbert, Philip and Norman Berthel. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Rebekah C. Joanna P., Sarah B., Joseph K., and Benjamin C. Harris.

Her funeral will be held in the West Congregational Church, 27 Johnson St., Peabody, at 11a.m. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the church prior to the service from 10 to 11 A.M. Interment will be at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
