Eleanor Rose Hurley , age 85, of Wakefield, died Thursday, May 14 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Born in Boston of June 24, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Theresa (Porter) Hicks.
Eleanor was born, raised, and educated in Boston; it is also where she met her husband, a neighbor, John P. Hurley . The two were married in New Hampshire and settled in Chelsea for the first nine years of their marriage before moving to Wakefield in 1964 to raise their family. She and John were members of St. Florence Church. Eleanor loved bowling on Tuesday mornings at the Wakefield Bowladrome; she also enjoyed knitting, crosswords, and word search. As a couple, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, among many destinations, their favorite was visiting Ireland every few years.
She was the beloved wife of John P. Hurley , with whom she shared 67 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of John P. Hurley , Jr. and his wife Patricia of York, ME, Brian Hurley and his wife Tracey of Wakefield, and Scott W. Hurley and his wife Jennifer of Peabody. She was the sister of Leslie, Charlie, and Robert Hicks and the late Natlie Kivley, Ruth Batcheldor, and George, Billy, and John Hicks. She was the grandmother of Noreen Walkup and her husband Eric of Derry, NH, Matthew Hurley and his fiancée Holly Glennon of Chelmsford, Shawn Hurley of CA, Meghan and Molly DelGreco of Wakefield, Conor Hurley of Ireland, and Olivia McMath-Hurley, Scotty and Liam Hurley , all of Peabody. She was the great grandmother of Jayden, Chase, Lillian, Colton, Landon, Brennan, Keira, Matthew, and Ryan. She was the former mother-in-law of Fildelma Hurley of Ireland.
Funeral Services will be private. Arrangements in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
