Esther Nowell

Esther Pratt Nowell, a lifelong resident of Wakefield died Sunday, August 8 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital at age 92.

Born in Melrose, MA on September 6, 1917 she was the daughter of the late Percival and Mary C. (Spaulding) Pratt.

Mrs. Nowell was a graduate of Wakefield High School and UMass Amherst. She was inducted into the WHS Hall of Fame in 2007. She served as a librarian for the Abraham Lincoln School of Boston. She was the founder of "Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society" (P.A.W.S.) in 1982 and aided in animal rescue and adoption. Mrs. Nowell was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year in 1997 by the New England Federation of Humane Societies. Mrs. Nowell was active in many town affairs including Trees for Wakefield, Friends of Lake Quannapowitt, Friends of the Beebe Library, Friends of Breakheart Reservation and teaching the 4th grade school children about animal safety and care.

Mrs. Nowell was the wife of the late Carleton W. Nowell. She was the mother of Paul P. Nowell, Sr. and his wife Dianne of Stoneham and Joyce N. Gantz of Bradford, MA. She was the sister of Orison Pratt of Stoneham. Grandmother of Paul Jr., Kristen, Troy, Jill, and Rebecca and was the great grandmother of 14.

A memorial service will be held in the First Parish Congregational Church Wakefield on Thursday, August 19 at 11am.Relatives and friends are invited to attend

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to P.A.W.S. of Wakefield, P.O. Box 1842, Wakefield, MA 01880. Arrangements are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home.
