Evelyn F. "Evie" Coveney, 88, of North Reading, formerly of Wakefield died on Sunday, June 28 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Born in Wakefield on November 10, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Minnie (Crocker) Whitney.
Evelyn was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1938. She was a retired insurance agent for the William Wallace Insurance Agency in Wakefield. After retiring she continued to work providing loving child care to many. She traveled extensively and frequently for many years and made annual excursions to Bermuda and York Beach Maine with friends and family. She enjoyed playing computer games, going to Foxwoods and Keno at Kitty's, her favorite restaurant, where she had many friends. She continued to join her Wakefield High School classmates for reunion luncheons. Evelyn was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. She loved reading, poetry and music.
Evelyn was the wife of the late Ernest Coveney. She was the mother of Stephen Coveney and his wife Veronica of Peabody, Gerald Coveney and his wife Leslie of Spring Hill, FL, and the late Edward Coveney. She was the grandmother of Casey and Patricia Whitcomb of Salem and sister-in-law of Stan Davis. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn will be especially missed by her niece Pamela Thompson and nephew Richard Field and their children Ross Thompson and his wife Sarah, Taryn Thompson and Kimberly Field and her very special friend Patrick Cox. She was predeceased by her best friends Larry and Joannie Colford.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday at the Lakeside Cemetery, North Ave, Wakefield at 11 am. Relatives and friends may call at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday, 4-7 pm.
