Fredric L . Kranefuss , 78, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, July 12.

Born in Malden on June 9, 1933 he was the son of the late Herman and Marion (Mellon) Kranefuss .

Fred was raised in Arlington and was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1951. He enlisted in the Army Airborne and served as a proud member of the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper during the Korean War.

In 1966 Fred married the love of this life, the late Phyllis (Gange) Kranefuss . In 1978 Fred and Phyllis moved to Stoneham, where they made their home, raised their children and Fred became an active member of the community. He was a little league and youth hockey coach for several years and a member of the Stoneham Auxiliary Police and the Stoneham American Legion, Post 115. Fred was an avid fan of all Boston sports but most importantly the Boston Red Sox.

Fred worked for Rosselli Construction for over thirty years, first as a laborer, then as a mason, and finally as a field supervisor. Upon his retirement from construction, he then worked for Bear Hill Nursing Home in Stoneham and Glenwood Nursing Home in Lowell as a maintenance director. He retired again in 1998 and his illustrious career in numerous capacities for the Town of Stoneham began.

Fred was the Memorial Day Parade Committee chairman for many years, culminating in his being the Grand Marshall of the 2011 parade. He was also a member of the Veterans Day Committee and the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Committee.

Fred is survived by his son and best friend Tony Kranefuss and his wife Jennifer of Stoneham, and his daughter Kristin Fox and her husband Dana of Dracut. He was the Grandfather of Sarah and Joe Kranefuss and Wil, Katie, Matt and Ally Fox. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Hermonie McLaughlin, Marion Kranefuss , and Joan (his twin) Kranefuss . Fred leaves behind many dear friends.

Funeral from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St. Stoneham, Monday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick Church 71 Central St, Stoneham at 10 o'clock. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 1 to 5pm. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
