George F. Cogan, Jr. a life long resident of the "Lincolnville" section of Stoneham died on January 19 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Woburn on March 4, 1925 he was the son of the late George F. Sr. and Sarah (Canniff) Cogan.
George proudly served with the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator on a B-24 bomber and was recalled by the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Cogan was a graduate of Stoneham High School, Class of 1943 and was a graduate of Boston University, Class of 1953 on the G.I. Bill, working to support his family while earning his degree. He then began a thirty-eight year career in education, most of which was in the Wilmington schools. George held many positions including US history teacher and guidance counselor, touching the lives of many young students with his dedication and love for this profession. It gave him great pleasure to coach the Wilmington High Hockey and Golf teams. He was an active member of the Wilmington Teachers Association advocating for quality education and the integrity of the teaching profession. Mr. Cogan was a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Stoneham serving as principal of the CCD program for many years. George also enjoyed many hours as a member of the Meadow Brook Golf Club in Reading improving his golf game and donating many hours to the club as House Chairman and as a member of the Board of Governors.
Mr. Cogan was the husband for over fifty years to the late Dorothy J. (Dalton) Cogan. He was the loving father of Patricia J. Sullivan and her husband John of Somerset, Jane Killeen and her husband James of Melrose and Daniel J. Cogan and his wife Leslie of Stoneham. George was the cherished grandfather John Sullivan, Tara Sullivan, Kathryn Sullivan Grishey, Jennifer Killeen, Lauren Killeen Mourad, Timothy Killeen, Sarah Catherine Killeen, Emily Cogan and Kathryn Cogan. He was the step- grandfather of Joseph Aurigemma and Jillian Aurigemma. Mr. Cogan was the great grandfather of James, Ryan, Samantha and Shay Mourad, Hannah and Cooper Grishey and Megan Killeen Pappo and the brother-in-law of Ruth Cogan of Stoneham.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham on Tuesday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St, Stoneham at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8pm. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Winchester. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
