Greta Hellmer of Lynnfield died recently at 93. She had a long and wonderful life, and she was loved by many people young and old, here and around the world.
Greta Hellmer was born on November 20, 1916 in Woburn, MA to the late Sune and Emma Franson
Greta Hellmer was a woman fully engaged in life. From her earliest years she was making steady progress in all her interests. She loved sports, including field hockey, swimming, badminton, ice skating, skiing, and running. She was a cheerleader for Woburn High School and graduated in 1934. If you consider that very few people had access to cars, it was quite an effort in planning to make the opportunities to do those things. She went to NH to ski. She would skate at Horn Pond and at the Boston Skating Club. Her lifelong interest in gardening included membership in the Arnold Arboritum. When she talked about her winning a 50 yard dash trophy at Woburn High she said she had trained for it by running to school every day. She may have been short on time because she had been busy helping her mother with her younger sisters and brothers. When she was a senior at Woburn High School she went to the Mass. College of Art program for high school students on Saturday mornings in Boston. Best of all, by her efforts as a sister, mother, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, pottery teacher, docent at the Lowell Weaving Museum, she helped to provide opportunities for others to learn. She helped young people to be prepared to also be fully engaged in life. Her painting and craft interests were enhanced by her travels to foreign countries. She painted watercolors in Mexico, Spain, France in Monet's garden, Austria, and Belgium and she her travels took her to Japan, England, China, Finland, Italy, Russia, & Sweden. Those travels were in the company of independent painters in group led by either the late Ann Fisk of Rockport, MA or by Christiane David of Mohnton, PA.
She worked at Esterbrooke and Company in Boston in her early years. She met her husband Carl while taking her younger siblings camping at Dolly Cop campground in New Hampshire. She and Carl were married in 1940 and had three children: Karin "Kory", Ingrid and Carl. She belonged to the Friends of Lake Quannapowitt , the lynnfield art guild , Wildcat Ski club The Boston Weavers' Guild, and the Lynnfield historical Society. She also wrote the Lynnfield column for the Wakefield Item in the 1940's . She taught weaving, Pottery making and she was a girl scout and Brownie leader in the fifty's and sixties, She worked as a librarian for RCA in the sixties and seventies. She worked in a textile museum in her later years. She was active right up until the spring before her death. . She was adored by everyone she knew.
Mrs. Hellmer was the wife of the late Carl M. Hellmer. She was the mother of Karin "Kory" Hellmer of Wakefield, Ingrid Hemphill and her husband Ray of PA, and Carl T. Hellmer and his wife Erika of Wakefield. She had six younger siblings, Ruth Haggerty, Hellen Jonnson, Ethel Stokes, Anna May Crimmon And The late Elmer and Bertle Franson. She is survived by her grandchildren Ryan Hemphill, Kirstin Bunker, Lorin and Erik Hellmer.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Centre Congregational Church, 5 Summer Street, Lynnfield at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13. Visiting with family and a sharing of stories as well as viewing of her paintings, photos, and memorabilia will be held across the street at the Old Meeting House from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. following the service.
