Helen Ogilvie

Helen J. (Jacobsen) Ogilvie of Peabody, MA formerly of Lynnfield, MA died on June 6 at home. She was 88.

Born in Healdsburg, California, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Katherine Elizabeth (Walker) Jacobsen. Mrs. Ogilvie attended the Healdsburg Public Schools, and in high school was a competitive swimmer. In 1940, she held the Junior Pacific Coast Championship in the 100 yard free style. She received her B.A. from San Jose State University and her M.A. from Teachers College of Columbia University where she majored in the teaching of Physical Education at the college level.

After graduate school, Mrs. Ogilvie was a physical education instructor at the Napa Junior High School, Napa, California, San Francisco State University, and Mills College in Oakland, California. In 1948, she married Hughes W. Ogilvie. In 1953, the couple moved to Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Mrs. Ogilvie was a long-time member of the
Salem Country Club where she was quite active as a golfer and the club's three-time Ladies Golf Champ.

Mrs. Ogilvie was an involved member of the Lynnfield Community for over 50 years. She was a past board member of the League of Women Voters and a former trustee of the Lynnfield Public Library. She was a very active member of the Lynnfield Art Guild, Townscape, the Cultural Center, the Lynnfield Historic Society, and was Director of Volunteers at the Lynnfield Library for over 25 years.

A long-time member of the Lynnfield Centre Congregational Church, she was involved in the church library, thrift shop, and the meal program for a local shelter. Mrs. Ogilvie spent many hours visiting people in nursing homes, and delivering plants and good cheer to the homebound in town.

Throughout the town during the summer, you could see Mrs. Ogilvie attending to the flower beds that made the town so attractive. Whether making Christmas wreaths or tying ribbons on Townscape trees, Helen Ogilvie dedicated herself to making the town of Lynnfield a beautiful and interesting place to live.

She was the beloved wife of the late Hughes W. Ogilvie, loving mother of Scott H. Ogilvie and his wife, Dr. Barbara Tylenda, of Worcester, MA and Nancy Ogilvie Ellis of Charleston, SC, devoted sister of Virginia Halpin of Burlingame, CA, grandmother of Matthew A. Karpas of Worcester, MA, and aunt to many nieces and nephews in CA. She was the sister of the late John Jacobsen and Richard Jacobsen.
