Hugh Sweeney

Hugh Francis Sweeney , of Stoneham, MA, passed away October 6, 2019. Age 100.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Pauline (Fraughton) Sweeney , nieces Terese Ajer of Lake Forest Park, WA, Diane Frost of Sandwich, MA and several other nieces and nephews.

Hugh was born on August 17, 1919 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Hugh Patrick Francis Sweeney and Helen Marie DeHart Sweeney . He was also the brother of the late Helen Marie Sweeney Turney.

Hugh served as a Corporal in the United States Army during World War II, receiving an Honorable Discharge on April 26, 1946. He was a member of the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Division. As a result of his distinguished service, Hugh received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, A Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. In 2016, Hugh received the Disabled American Veteran's Commanders Club Certificate of Appreciation for Loyal and Faithful Service.

After completing his Service, Hugh attended Drexel Institute of Technology graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in June 1954. After he and Pauline married in 1963, they made their home in Stoneham, MA. He worked in sales for many years initially with Link-Belt Cranes and eventually retiring from Colmar Belting Company, Inc.

His Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Friday at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham prior to the mass from 8:30-9:30am. Burial to take place at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA on October 17 at 11:30am.
