Irene Courtenay

Irene M. Courtenay, 90, of Wakefield, died on Tuesday, August 23 at her home.

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on February 20, 1921 she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah (Maceachern) Beaton.

Irene was a graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1940. She had been a Wakefield resident since 1962 and was a member of St. Joseph parish. Irene enjoyed traveling to West Palm Beach in Florida and loved to dance.

Irene was the wife of the late Francis X. Courtenay. She was the mother of Maureen C. Courtenay of Wakefield, Patricia E. Burwell and her husband William of Peabody, Catherine A. Coats and her husband Bruce of Chanute, KS, and Michael F. Courtenay of Stoneham. She was the sister of Ronald J. Beaton of SC, Bernard A. Beaton of Brockton and the late Sister M. Genevava SSJ (Cecilia), John J. Beaton, Gertrude A. Gately, and Patricia L. Morrison. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday (today) from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield.
