, 99, a long-time resident of Lynnfield, died Wednesday June 8, 2022 at the Belmont Manor Nursing Center in Belmont.
Born
Irene
Louise Goodlet on September 9, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was the fifth of six children born to Alfred L and Olive Helen (Batte) Goodlet.
Irene
graduated from Pike Township School in rural Indianapolis in 1940 and attended Butler University (Indianapolis) for one year before her studies ended as the United States was preparing for its entry into World War II.
Irene
married Joseph
Mees
Jr. on April 18, 1942, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Irene
and Joe moved from Indiana to Massachusetts in 1956 and remained there for the balance of their lives. They were married for seventy-two years until Joe's death in May 2014.
Following Joe's retirement in 1987, he and
Irene
travelled extensively and visited nearly every corner of the globe. On several of their trips they worked as volunteers for the Earthwatch Institute in places as varied as Siberia, Alaska, Japan and Majorca.
Irene
is survived by two sons, Dr. Leonard
Mees
of Portland, Oregon, and Thomas
Mees
of Palo Alto, California; six grandchildren Joey, Cindy, Sarah, Becky, Walker and Haley; and seven great-grandchildren Tanner, Carter, Parker, Skyler, Tucker, Anabel and Elsa.
Irene
was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, two sisters, one son, David
Mees
, who died in 1991, and one great-granddaughter, Louise Petersen.
Interment will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield.
