Jadwiga Russo

Jadwiga "Vega" Russo, 74, of Wakefield, passed away at home on Monday, January 6th following a brief battle with kidney cancer.

Vega was born in Popiolki, Poland on June 17, 1939, the daughter of the late Antoni and Bronislawa (Grajko) Jurczak. She was educated in Poland and became a resident of Wakefield upon arriving to the U.S. in 1961.

Until her illness, Vega worked part-time at Corporale's Liquors on Broadway. In her younger days, Vega enjoyed weekly card games and summer block parties with neighborhood friends, and she would always prepare meals for bachelor brothers who often gathered at her home. Vega treasured flower gardening, daily walks around Lake Quannapowitt, and preparing her delicious specialties for family, which included lasagna and meatballs, stuffed cabbage, and macaroni & potato salads.

Vega is predeceased by her husband, John F. Russo, and siblings Anna (Jurczak) Burbine, Anthony Jurczak, Wincenty Jurczak, Jan Jurczak and Laura (Jurczak) Bartells.

Vega is lovingly remembered by her brother, Marian Jurczak of Wakefield and her children, Susan Russo Rogers and husband Steven of Wilmington, MA, Lisa Russo-Barber and husband David of Sugar Land, Texas, and John D. Russo and wife Rachel of Wakefield, MA and grandchildren Caleb Rogers, Jacob Rogers and Mia Russo. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Albert Burbine, Sr., of Andover and sister-in-law, Marianna Jurczak, of Wakefield, and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, 4-6:30 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
