James Leahy
James M. Leahy, 85, of Wakefield, formerly of Melrose, died on Tuesday, December 23 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Born in Malden on May 1, 1923, he was the son of the late William P. and Helena (O'Connell) Leahy.
Mr. Leahy was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the Aleutian and South Pacific Campaigns. He was a retired Director of Public Affairs for New England Life Insurance Company for 45 years. While at New England Life he was very active in community relations in Boston.
Mr. Leahy was a Past President of the Boston Kiwanis Club, President of Camp Allen for Handicapped Children, President of Boston Back Bay Association, and President of the International Management Council of the Y.M.C.A.
He was a member of St. Mary Church in Melrose and Past President of the Holy Name Society and Parish Council.
Mr. Leahy was the husband of Rosemary (Connolly) Leahy. He was the father of James M. Leahy, Jr. of Wareham, William P. Leahy and his wife Marjorie of Windham, John J. Leahy and his wife Cynthia of Weston and Edward R. Leahy and Robin Abrahams of Newton. He was the brother of the late Leo P. Leahy, Helen Flanders, Mary Patrie, Sr., Aelreda Leahy, SSND, Ruth Covino, Virginia Joyce, Margaret Cannon and Gertrude Andrew. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday at 8:00 A.M. followed by a funeral mass in St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut St., Lynnfield at 9:00 o'clock. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 3 to 7 P.M.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Rd., Wilton, CT 06897.
