Jason Farrell

Jason McCall Farrell, age 40, a lifelong Wakefield resident died Tuesday, March 6.

Born in Stoneham on November 1, 1977, he is the son of and survived by James M. and Cheryl A. (Funk) Farrell, longtime Wakefield residents.

Jason attended the Hurd School, the Wakefield Middle School, and the Wakefield High School, graduating in 1996. While in high school, he was a standout football player from his sophomore year playing alongside his older brother and holds three Wakefield Warrior Football records including a 99-yard fumble return for a touchdown on Friday the 13th of October 1995 in a game in which he scored all 31 points in a 31-0 win in Woburn. Scoring four different ways, kicking all four extra points, knocking through a field goal, and dominating the game from start to finish, his performance lead to an appearance on Channel 5 News, Sports Edition High Five.

He holds Wakefield Football records for the longest field goal and the longest touchdown reception. Although records not kept for punting, he also recorded punts of 57 and 61 yards in a 3-0 win in Wakefield against Stoneham his senior year with the only score in the game being a 44-yard field goal by Jason. His play led to Middlesex League Most Valuable Player ("MVP") honors and Boston Globe All-Scholastic honors in 1995.

After finishing his senior season for the Warriors, Jason played in the Shriners All-Star Football Classic and Middlesex League Carroll Classic earning MVP honors in the Carroll Classic.

After graduating at Wakefield High, Jason was heavily recruited to play football and, ultimately, chose his father's alma mater Northeastern University. While playing in the Northeastern Huskies Football program from 1996 through 2001 as its top Scholar Athlete including a red-shirt freshman year, he focused his efforts on punting. His name is included among the top 5 Huskies football records for punts, punting yards, and punting average.

Jason achieved both a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Criminal Justice while at Northeastern University. Notably, he enjoyed time working for the Civil Enforcement Division of the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission and, most recently, as a paralegal for a law firm in Boston. He was an avid fan of Boston sports and would routinely appear at Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins games.

He is the beloved son of Cheryl A. (Funk) Farrell and James M. Farrell. He is the cherished brother of Jaime M. Farrell and his wife Concetta of Merrick, NY, and Christina A. Farrell of Wakefield. He is the loving uncle of Olivia and Everly Farrell. He is the adored grandson of Jean C. (Yazinka) Funk of Wakefield, Phyllis Sacco of Florida, and the late Albert F. Funk and Richard J. Farrell, of Wakefield and Stoneham, respectively. He is the beloved nephew of Paul and the late Marie Funk, Charles and Maureen Funk, and Robert and Linda (Funk) Moses. He is also survived by many loving cousins and family, and countless friends, coaches and teammates who loved him so dearly.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main Street, Wakefield on Monday at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Avenue, Wakefield on Sunday from 1-5pm. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
