Jerome McCullough
Jerome "Jerry" T. McCullough, 89, a life-long resident of Wakefield, died Sunday, August 18 at the Epoch Nursing Center in Melrose.
Born in Wakefield on February 23, 1924 he was the son of the late George J. and Viola (Schmoyer) McCullough.
Mr. McCullough was a 1937 graduate of St. Joseph's Parish School and a graduate of Wakefield High School Class of 1941. He was a long time member of St. Florence Parish in Wakefield. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in Germany and France with the U.S. Army as Technical Sgt. in Company L, 274th Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, known as" The Trailblazers". Upon returning from service, he continued his education and was a proud graduate of Northeastern University College of Engineering, Class of 1948, where he received a B.S in Civil Engineering. One of his fond memories was leading the NU Engineering Class of 1998 to their Commencement on the 50th anniversary of his own graduation.
Jerome's career as a Civil Engineer was long and productive. He worked for over 30 years as the Principle Engineer and Superintendent of Charles Capone Construction Company of Dedham. He was involved in the construction of many miles of Route 128 and several of the highway's bridges. Upon retiring, he and Ginny spent over 20 years wintering in Naples, FL. They loved traveling and saw much of the world, including the Panama Canal, an engineering feat Jerome was fascinated by. They also traveled to the 70th Division/Trailblazers reunions all over the U.S., meeting old Army buddies and making new ones. Jerome was highlighted in the Trailblazers Newsletter when the new WWII Memorial was erected in Wakefield; he prized his paver in the Memorial's Walkway. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and The Elks.
Jerome was the devoted husband of the late Virginia "Ginny" (Farnham) McCullough who passed away in 2010, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Jerome was dedicated to his family and is survived by his five children and their families including, Linda Cooper and her husband Paul of Boxford, Jerome "Jerry" T. McCullough, Jr. and his wife Kathleen, of North Reading, Patricia Dunn and her husband John of Beverly, Elaine McCormack of Danvers, and Joanne Albarelli and her husband Gary of Brandon, FL. He was the loving Grandfather of Sarah Slack and Dan, Zachary Collins and Dana, Seth McCullough and Katrina, Rebecca Nodia and Sasha, Ian Cooper and Amy, Lana Cooper, Abigail Carmean and Chris, Andrew Dunn, Conor McCormack, and Helen Albarelli. He leaves his beloved six great-grandsons, Owen, Riley and Quinn, Tucker and Beau, and Jeremiah. He is also survived by his in-laws, Rita Willette of Lynnfield, George Farnham of Naples, FL, Beverly Farnham of North Andover, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, George and T. Donald McCullough, and his son-in-law, Sean McCormack.
Funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Florence Church., 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8pm. Interment, Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield.
