He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in Germany and France with the U.S. Army as Technical Sgt. in Company L, 274th Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, known as" The Trailblazers". They loved traveling and saw much of the world, including the Panama Canal, an engineering feat Jerome was fascinated by. They also traveled to the 70th Division/Trailblazers reunions all over the U.S., meeting old Army buddies and making new ones. Jerome was highlighted in the Trailblazers Newsletter when the new WWII Memorial was erected in Wakefield; he prized his paver in the Memorial's Walkway. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and The Elks.

Jerome was the devoted husband of the late Virginia "Ginny" (Farnham) McCullough who passed away in 2010, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.
