Joan Nielsen

Joan Inez Nielsen , 80, a longtime resident of Lynnfield died Saturday October 2, at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Inez (Costain) Harrison.

Joan was a graduate of Malden High School. She was a member of the Wakefield Lynnfield United Methodist Church and has been a Lynnfield resident since 1963. Joan was one of the principal founders of the Independent Living Center of the North Shore and Cape Ann Inc., which provides information to the physically disabled so they can live on their own. Joan was also very devoted to her family.

She was the beloved wife of 60 years to her devoted husband Kenneth Nielsen . Loving mother of Heidi McGlauflin of No. Reading, Peter of Montpelier, VT, Brent of Belchertown, and Kenneth R. of Reading. Also survived by her 9 grandchildren; Johanna, Robert, and Brielly McGlauflin, Jennifer and Nicholas Nielsen , and Sienna, Anders, Izabel, and Noah Nielsen , and 1 great grandchild Elle Nielsen .

A Funeral service will be held in the Wakefield-Lynnfield United Methodist Church, 273 Vernon St., Wakefield on Wednesday at 11am. A period of visitation will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Tuesday 4-8pm.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Independent Living Center of the North Shore and Cape Ann Inc. 27 Congress St., Suite 107 Salem, MA 01970.
