John J. Coughlin, Jr., 85, of Wakefield, died on Thursday, February 17 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Born in Cambridge on July 30, 1925 he was the son of the late John J. and Alice I. (Delaney) Coughlin.
Mr. Coughlin was raised in Brighton and was a graduate of Brighton High School. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Currituck. He served in the South Pacific and received Philippine Liberation Campaign medal. He retired after many years with the New England Telephone Co.
Mr. Coughlin was a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield. He was also a member of the West Side Social Club and was the Grand Marshall of the Wakefield 4th of July Parade in 1964.
Mr. Coughlin was the father of Leonard A. Coughlin and his wife Maureen, Brian Coughlin and his wife Edith and Jan M. Mauceri and her husband Chuck all of Wakefield and John Coughlin and his wife Sally of Barrington, IL. He was the brother of the late Leonard R. and William F. Coughlin. He was the grandfather of Craig, Thomas and Michael Coughlin, Beth Hussey, Lauren Ventura and Alex Mauceri and the great grandfather of 9. He was the former husband of Eleanor C. (O'Connell) and is also survived by his sister-in-law Tafta Coughlin of Natick.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield at 10 a.m. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
