John P. Courtney, 84, of Lynnfield, formerly of Holyoke, died on Thursday, January 31 at the Lynn Union Hospital.
Born in Holyoke on June 1, 1928 he was the son of the late Michael D. and Elizabeth (McCarthy) Courtney.
John was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Holyoke and Wentworth Institute. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the U.S. Army. Before his retirement John had worked as a mechanical engineer for General Electric.
He was the husband of Gail (Moakler) Courtney. He was the father of Thomas Leonard and his wife Marie of Hopkinton, Patrick Leonard and his wife Ellen of Dorchester, Daniel Leonard of Boston, Brenda White and her late husband Douglas of Concord, Mary Tuttle and her husband Mark of Salem and Nora Landry and her husband Kevin of Holden. He was the loving Grandfather of Catherine, Brian and Christine Leonard, Jake and Greta White and Lucy and Charlie Tuttle. He was the brother of the late Sr. Mary Courtney, Reverend Thomas Courtney and Elizabeth O'Brien.
A funeral mass will be celebrated in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Corner of Grove and Salem St., Lynnfield on Monday at 12 p.m. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield prior to the mass from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
