John Driscoll
John James Driscoll, 93, of Lynnfield, formerly of Revere, died peacefully Saturday morning, December 12, at his home surrounded by his family. John has been the beloved husband of Virginia Driscoll for the past 68 years. They shared a special kind of love. They complemented each other in so many ways and demonstrated the true meaning of friendship, respect and appreciation of each other.
Born in Revere on January 8, 1916, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Kathleen Driscoll. Family members include his loving wife Virginia, his three wonderful children Jane Gordon, John Driscoll and Fred Driscoll, son-in-law Thomas Gordon and daughter-in-laws Suzan Driscoll and Michelle Driscoll, 7 grandchildren and their spouses, 4 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, his brother, the late Dr. Cornelius Driscoll and his foster brother the late John Barton and his widow, Betty Buonaugurio and his late beloved sister-in-law Dr. Helen E. Lane.
John was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran in World War II, where he had an honorable discharge and also served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of Operating Engineers, Local 4 for 55 years. Additionally, John taught welding in their apprenticeship program for over 20 years. John served as a Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus Council #179 in Revere and has been a faithful well respected member of Our Lady of Assumption Church in Lynnfield for the past 40 years, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. Until 2 months ago John was a dedicated and was the oldest member of the Lynnfield YMCA, attending 3 times a week. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed golfing with family and friends.
For those of you that know John he has lived quite a fulfilling life. He and Virginia traveled incessantly to such places as Alaska, Ireland, Israel, England, France to name a few; however, one of his greatest moments was at the Vatican in Rome where Pope John Paul personally honored his presence by blessing his ring.
John's main priority was always family where he instilled such strong values. He built a family that is so loved and adored by one another. What a legacy John created!!
John is a man who was loved and admired by all. He has touched so many people's lives and always left a lasting impression on everyone whose path he crossed. He was passionate about everything he did and he was one of the most non-judgmental people you could ever meet. His strong desire to live life to the fullest was envied by all. He refused to give up and he never complained. He was truly an inspiration and an example of how a person should live. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. We are all so thankful that we have been given the opportunity to be a part of his world. John was a remarkable husband, a magnificent dad, an amazing "father"-in-law, a grandfather that everyone dreams of having, a great-grandfather, which not everyone is fortunate enough to become and a best friend whom everyone looked up to.
We all hope that we can come close to accomplishing all that John has over the past ninety three years and more than anything else we hope that we can come close to being the person that John was. We miss you so much and though we never wanted this day to come, we thank you for 93 incredible years. It has been quite a journey. To you John Driscoll "You're Wonderful, God Bless You!"
Calling hours will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Lynnfield, 758 Salem St. on Tuesday, December 15, from 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m A. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Assumption Church on Wednesday, December 16, at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Willow Cemetery, Lynnfield.
