, Jr., age 84, of Lynnfield, Marco Island, FL and Barrington, NH passed away on December 16th at the Kaplan Family Hospice Center in Danvers after a lengthy illness.
John
was the son of
John
F
. and Emma H.
Carter
and the brother of Hope Ayers and Jane Aldrich.
He was the beloved husband of Gladys M.
Carter
with whom he shared sixty-four wonderful years of marriage. Together they had four children:
Faith Honer-Coakley and her husband Peter of Lynnfield, Joy Smith of Saratoga, NY, Paula Davis and her husband James of Atlanta, GA, and Carol Bartlett and her husband Philip of Lynnfield. They were blessed with eight grandchildren:

Davis, Christopher Smith and Karen Smith Stedman. Thirteen great grandchildren extended those blessings.
John
treasured spending time with his family, who all meant the world to him.
He was born in Beverly, MA, and lived in Malden for a few years before moving to Lynnfield. He attended Wakefield High School, but graduated from Tilton Academy in NH. Soon after he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a Quartermaster on the USS Grasp, a repair and recovery vessel in the Pacific arena.
After his Naval service in WW II,
John
worked in the family grocery store, Carter's Market of Lynnfield. He moved on to the Malden Savings Bank in the mortgage department, eventually becoming a corporator and a trustee of that banking institution. For many years he was a supervisor for a Boston area construction company. At age fifty,
John
and his wife, Gladys, became owners and publishers of the Lynnfield – West Peabody Shopper's News, later starting the Wakefield Shopper's News. They made it a priority to publish old Lynnfield photographs and history. As a businessman, he was proud to be a Rotarian and was honored with the Service Above Self Award. They retired in 1988 and began spending winters in Florida where

and Gladys happily spent lots of time on the golf course and enjoyed enduring friendships. He will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
Visiting hours will be a McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Avenue, Wakefield on Wednesday, December 21 from 6-8 PM. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 22 at 11 AM at the Center Congregational Church, 5 Summer Street, Lynnfield. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery.
