John Hughes

John J. Hughes , 90, of Chelmsford and a former long time Stoneham resident died Wednesday June 6 at the Lowell General Hospital.

Born in Malden on November 27, 1921 the son of the late Thomas J. & Mary (Kelly) Hughes .

Mr. Hughes was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School. He was a retired supervisor for Mass Electric. Mr. Hughes was a decorated World War II Army veteran and had participated in D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach. He served as a Sergeant and was a P.O.W. He received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement during the invasion. He was a member of the Stoneham Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Hughes was the husband of the late Esther May (Smith) Hughes . He is survived by his son Lawrence Hughes and wife Sarah of Dover, PA, his two daughters; Carol Howe and husband James of Middletown, CT and Katherine Calnan and husband Brian of Londonderry, NH and his brother William Hughes of Malden. Mr. Hughes is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his two brothers; Thomas Hughes and Michael Hughes and his two sisters; Cecelia Fleming and Mary Cahill.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham on Monday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St, Stoneham at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 1-4pm. Interment will be at Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham.
