John J. "Jack" Johnston , Jr . age 97 of Stoneham and a former resident of Medford died July 31 at the E.N. Rogers Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford, MA.
Jack was born in Medford, MA on April 12, 1924 and was the son of the late John J. and Madeline P. (Moore) Johnston .
He was raised in Medford and was a graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1942 and later from Fitchburg State College. He was certified as an Electronics Instructor and taught for 27 years at the Medford Vocational and Technical School before retiring from there in 1989. He also worked many years as an Electronic Technician for the RCA Service Company. Jack also enjoyed traveling and operating his amateur radio station W1EW.
Jack was also a distinguished veteran and served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman 1st Class with the US Navy 7th Fleet - Submarine Division. He served in both W.W. II and Korea.
He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred (Matarazzo) Johnston . He was the loving father of John J. Johnston , III of NH and the late Lois A. Hutchins. He was also the devoted grandfather of Kimberly A. Hutchins of Stoneham.
His Funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home 322 Main Street Stoneham on Friday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Patrick Church 71 Central Street Stoneham at 10:00. Interment will follow at Lindenwood Cemetery. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) P.O Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301
