Joseph Canty

Joseph J. Canty, of Lynnfield died Friday, January 3rd at his residence surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 7, 1950, the son of the late John and Emily (Layton) Canty. Joe was raised in Somerville and was a graduate of Saint Clement High School, Class of 1968 and later from Bentley College in 1972 where he also played basketball. He made his career as an accountant for various companies and the Town of Nahant. His true passion was working with his hands, building and fixing things for friends and family, which extended into a retirement side business he called "The Old Fashioned Handyman." He was a longtime resident of Lynnfield and was an avid sports fan, cook, golfer and brewmaster. He enjoyed everything life had to offer, especially his friends and family.

Joe was the beloved husband of Susan (Burrall) Canty for 35 years and the loving father of Colleen Canty and her husband Scott Steiner. He was the brother of Lorraine Dunnett and her husband Bruce of Centerville, MA and the late Michael Canty. He was the brother-in-law of Kathleen Canty of Nahant, MA and Leigh Burrall and his wife Linda of New Boston, NH. He is also survived by his special cousins, Peggy Dwyer and Patty Allen and many nieces and nephews.

His Funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home 19 Yale Avenue Wakefield on Wednesday at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church Lynnfield at 10am. Interment will follow at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in W. Peabody. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8pm.
