Katherine Rose (Rochon) Dean, 86, of Stoneham died peacefully on Wednesday, January 3, 2013 at Aberjona Rehab in Winchester after a short illness.
Katherine was born and raised on Quincy St. in the Edgeworth section of Malden, MA on July 9, 1926. She was the daughter of Katherine (Lawlor) and Patrick Shine, loving sister to Marjorie Shine Hery of Melrose and the late Joseph Shine of Medford. In the first 21 years of her life, they lived in the extended family home with her aunts, uncles and cherished cousins.
Katherine was the wife of the late Emile Rochon and the former wife of the late Carl Dean. She raised 8 children primarily in Somerville and Stoneham, MA. Before the early death of Emile in 1960, her young growing family had homes in VT, ME, NY and MA near the M.H. Fishman stores that Emile managed.
Katherine had a great love of nostalgia, was an avid reader and was never without a desire to discuss current or nostalgic events. She was a child of the Great Depression and never forgot the many mixed blessings it brought her in life. She forever enjoyed the luxury of having "a bite to eat" or a cup of coffee at the local Brigham's or Friendly's wherever she lived. Reading the newspaper and checking her lottery # each day brought her great satisfaction and many dreams of how to share her potential winnings with those she loved.
Katherine is survived by her loving children, Carolyn Abruzzo (husband Robert) of Burlington, Edward Rochon of Arlington, Marian Irwin (husband William) of Melrose, Paul Rochon of Andover, Marjorie Rochon (partner John Kelley) of Framingham, Carl Dean, Jr. of Salem and Barbara Dean (husband Charles Samatis) of Wakefield. She is predeceased by her eldest, faithful and loving son, Robert Rochon of Stoneham.
She is remembered by her beautiful grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick and Caitlin Abruzzo, Emily and Laura Irwin, Jennifer and Jarred Dean and their sister Haley Vuong. She was blessed with 10 nieces and nephews from the Hery and Shine families and their children.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 10 A.M. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald – Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St. Stoneham prior to the Mass starting at 8:30. All are invited to attend.
