Lillian Pauline (Lemerise) Hayward, 84, of Nashua, NH and a former long-time Lynnfield resident, passed away on Monday, December 21 at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston after suffering several strokes. Born in Berlin, NH on January 23, 1925, she was the youngest daughter of the late Alton E. and Laura E. (Clement) Lermerise.
Lillian grew up in Chelsea and survived a difficult childhood during the Depression. She was the much-loved "baby" of the family and was a mischievous child who enjoyed tricking the nuns at parochial school. Her close bond with her siblings lasted their whole lives.
She quit high school and went to work in the Boston Shipyard during World War II. She lived with her parents in Lynnfield in a house her father built on Pillings Pond. After the war she co-owned a diner on Route One in Lynnfield, with her older sister Barbara. She then went to work for her father's taxi company where she had a special fare, her future husband Raymond (Jake) William Hayward. Lillian drove for the company up until the birth of her first child. After marrying Raymond (Jake) William Hayward, she become a housewife and instant mother to his son, Peter, and went on to have a daughter Dawn Ellen and a son Raymond William Jr. Family was most important and the greatest joy in her life. She was especially close and devoted to her sister Margaret, who sadly and recently passed away on December 7, 2009.
She was a wonderfully devoted and affectionate mother with a great sense of adventure and a wicked sense of humor. She was generous with her time and wisdom and gave unconditional love. She and her husband created a loving home and always made the holidays magical for their children and grandchildren. She was brave and courageous with the challenges life brought her. Everyone just loved to come to visit with Lillian because she made them feel welcome and special. There was always a lot of laughter around her. She really appreciated and enjoyed time with family and friends. She and her best friend Liz Cummings were willing cohorts in many adventures together but also performed many kind and charitable acts for others all well. Lillian was an avid crafter whose specialty was beautiful crochet work and homemade dolls. She was a great innovative cook and loved to eat. She loved children and dogs. She enjoyed going for drives in the car, shopping and movies. She organized many neighborhood parties and was the initiator of the annual Fourth of July bonfire party that lasted 25 years, attended by many in the town of Lynnfield.
Lillian and Jake traveled to Pennsylvania Dutch country, Canada and New England but were most content to pack a picnic lunch and take a day trip and just enjoy each other's company.
After her husband passed away in 1987, she moved to upstate New York for a short while to be close to her daughter and then both she and her daughter and granddaughter relocated to Nashua, NH in the early 1990's.
She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Raymond (Jake) William Hayward Sr. with whom she was married to for 34 years, two older sisters Barbara E. (Lemerise) Whippen and Margaret A. Lemerise, an older brother, Gerald P. Lemerise, his wife Alice, a cousin whom she considered a brother, Lawrence Boucher, a niece Kathleen Lemerise and a great-nephew, Gerald Lemerise III.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter, Peter S., Dawn E. (Hayward) DeOliveira and her husband Daniel, Raymond W. Jr. and his wife Kimberly, and a brother Marcel Lemerise of Canada.
She was a loving and proud grandmother to Tara, Shelby, Alexander, Ashley, Nazim and Yaseen. She was also a beloved aunt to Patricia, Laura, Roy, Gerald Jr., Richard, Alton, Nancy and their respective spouses as well as great-nieces & nephews, Mark, Dale, Jodi, Michelle, Susan, Todd, Gregory, Lee, Lisa and their respective spouses and many great-great nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her "sister-in-law" Mildred Boucher, former daughter-in-laws Carol & Leona, as well as many friends and neighbors from the old Lynnfield neighborhood. She is also survived by several cousins.
Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy and she will live forever in their hearts. We will cherish her memory and our Mom and Nana will be missed beyond expression.
Her family would especially like to thank the staff at the Laurel Center in Bedford, NH for their wonderful care. Lillian was in the best health ever due to their personal attention and genuine concern for her comfort.
A funeral service will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Monday at 11am. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1-4pm. Interment will be at Willow Cemetery in Lynnfield.
