Marjorie C. (McCarthy) O'Toole-O'Melia, 96, of Stoneham, MA passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2023.
She was born May 7, 1927 in Medford, MA to the late Abigail and Robert McCarthy.
Marge was a graduate of Medford High School. As a teen, during World War II, she took her first job at the York Harbor Inn, York ME. This was the beginning of a generational love of York Beach where the family continues to vacation.
On April 3, 1947, she married William H. "Sarge” O’Toole, Jr. (MDC Police Sergeant) and moved to Stoneham, MA where they raised their seven children. The late William H. O'Toole III, Eileen N. O'Toole (William Tice), Michael F. O'Toole, Kevin E. O'Toole (David Maxfield), Thomas R. O'Toole (Cathy O'Toole), Marjorie C. Mahoney (John Mahoney) and Maryellen O'Toole (Hachem ElKhelfi). She took great pleasure in having her home filled with friends and family including her eight grandchildren, Jesse Haley (Katie), Elizabeth Haley, Michael O'Toole (Candace Fournier), Rory O'Toole, Jonathan Mahoney (Meghan), Jeremy Mahoney (Elise), Karen O'Toole, Robert Abisi (Jacqueline Algiers) and 14 great grandchildren. While raising her family she was employed at Bear Hill Country Club where she worked as a waitress and hostess for more than 30 years.
Marge was widowed for many years but was lucky enough to fall back in love and marry the late Joseph O'Melia, (MDC Police Lieutenant). Sarge's lifelong best friend. The couple surprised her children by eloping at Nubble Lighthouse.
She was predeceased by her loving brothers and sisters, Irene Stopyra, Robert McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Eleanor Davis, Mary Alice Means, Francis McCarthy, Henry McCarthy, Walter McCarthy and Claire Flynn. Also, her in-laws that welcomed her with open arms, William H. (Stoneham Police Lieutenant) and Katherine O'Toole and their children Katherine Doherty, Alice Chase, Barbara Sweeney, Lawrence and Francis O'Toole and their spouses. She is survived by her sister Patricia McCarthy and numerous nephews and nieces. She so enjoyed their visits and phone calls sharing stories of the past.
The family wishes to thank Beth Israel Lahey Clinic Hospice for their thoughtful care and guidance.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Marjorie's life on Wednesday, June 21 at 10:30am-12:30pm at McDonald Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St, Stoneham, MA followed by a graveside service at Lindenwood Cemetery at 1pm.
