Martha Downs

Martha Downs, 72, of Stoneham died on Friday, December 12 at her home.

Born in Woburn on February 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Frederick C. and Doris M. (LaSalle) Darling.

Mrs. Downs was a life long resident of Stoneham and a graduate of Stoneham High School, Class of 1954. She had been a crossing guard for the Town of Stoneham and also worked for the Stoneham Independent. Later, she was a longtime employee for the Stoneham School Department and retired as Assistant Business Manager for the schools in 2001. She was a member of the Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials and also served as Secretary Treasurer.

Mrs. Downs was the beloved wife of John W. "Jack" Downs. She was the loving mother of John W. Downs, Jr. & his wife Marianne of Winchester, Jean M. O'Halloran & her husband John of Stoneham & Jeffrey M. Downs & his wife Elizabeth of Dover, NH. She was the sister of Frederick Darling of Townsend, Carolyn Cummings of Lynn & Norma McDaid of TX and the devoted grandmother of Meaghan, Bridget, John, Tim, Garrett, James & Scott. She was the cousin of Robert, Richard & Ralph Powers, Phyllis Pearson and the late Raymond Powers & Marguerite Lane.

Her funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Tuesday at 9AM followed by a funeral mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 10:00 o'clock. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 PM. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
