Mary E. Giglio

Mary Giglio, a steady and positive force whose can-do spirit, intelligence, and compassion touched all who knew her, passed away Saturday, September 14, 2024. Mary was an avid gardener and loved animals, especially the wild birds, bunnies, and squirrels that frequented her feeder in the yard. Always independently minded, at the age of 89, she took the train into Boston by herself—something she hadn’t done in 50 years—to take part in the Women’s March.

Mary attended Saint Joseph's School, graduated from Wakefield High School, and continued her studies at Suffolk University before embarking on a meaningful career at MIT. A dedicated employee and a kind soul, she was always ready to help others. An accomplished artist, painter, and illustrator, Mary’s creative talents enriched the lives of her family, employers, and community.

In addition to raising four children, she cared for her ailing parents with love and devotion. For 27 years, she worked at the Winchester Public Library, offering warmth and guidance to all who visited. Born and raised in Wakefield, Mary remained a lifelong resident of the town she called home. She was the devoted wife of the late George Giglio Roland and a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her sons, George Giglio of Melrose, Christopher Giglio of Upton, and Jonathan Giglio of Belmont, as well as five cherished grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Dara Weller, of Lander, Wyoming.

Mary also leaves behind her godson, Fred Confalone of Lawrence, along with many caring and loving friends. A special thank you to Joseph Collins, Myrna Evelyn, and Shellyann Wilson for their unwavering support and kindness. Her warmth, selflessness, and contributions to family, friends, and community will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield on Thursday, September 19 at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment, St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham. Arrangements are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
