Mary Helen Campbell, nee Center, 1944-2023

Mary Helen Campbell, nee Center, passed away quietly on April 4, 2023, after receiving the Last Rites. She is mourned by her husband William Campbell, her brothers William (Sandy) and Garry (Lynn) Center, sister Dr. Kathleen Vance and nephews Gregory and David Center and Christopher Vance, and niece Kristin Center, and grand nieces and nephews Austin, Gabrielle and Taylor (David and Kate), Johnny, Billy and Emmy (Gregory and Carla) and Niko (Chris and Claire). Mary is predeceased in 2020 by her youngest brother Christopher Center (husband to Barbara and father to Kristin).

Mary was born to Dorothy and William Center in Champaign, Illinois, on June 1, 1944. She grew up in Schenectady, New York, where she graduated from Schalmont High School in 1962. She graduated from Saint Catherine’s Infant Home in Albany, New York, as a Child Care Technician in September 1963. Upon graduation Mary worked at the Infant Home for almost two years. Mary then completed an Associate Degree in Nursery Education with Russell Sage College, Junior College of Albany, in 1967. Mary received additional training with the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1965, where she worked as a psychiatric aide.

In 1968, Mary began her employment with Liberty Mutual Insurance Group of Boston, Massachusetts, where she worked for twenty-one years. A claims representative and senior underwriter, Mary excelled in training analysts and underwriters and designing and writing coverage and training manuals.

At that time Mary also began her life in Stoneham, Massachusetts, with her husband William Campbell, the love of her life. Mary and Bill are both members of Saint Patrick’s Church in Stoneham.

In retirement, Mary became a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. She loved to lead courses on the church and its teachings. Mary also was a genius at arts and crafts and donated many centerpieces and other works to the church as fundraisers. Her beautiful home is a testament to her love of interior decorating and sewing. Mary was a happy traveller and particularly enjoyed yearly sojourns in Florida and trips to Richmond, Virginia; Stowe, Vermont; Seattle, Washington; and Vancouver, Canada, to visit family, all of whom will miss beyond measure her kind words, generous spirit and happy laughter.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Wednesday, April 19 at 10am. Visitation for relatives and friends at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Tuesday, April 18 from 4-7pm. Interment, Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Stoneham.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
