Murphy, Mary T. (Hynes), a longtime resident of Stoneham and also of Chatham passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 18, 2023.
Beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Murphy Jr. Daughter of the late Patrick J. Hynes and Molly (Culliney) Hynes. Loving mother of Tara Mitchell and her husband John of Stoneham, Kathleen Murphy and Travis Lee of Middleton, Kerry (Murphy) Castrucci and Sean Kenney of Wilmington, Elaine Shuttleworth and her husband Dana of Georgetown, Thomas Murphy and his wife Cheryl of Stoneham and Meghan Murphy and Angelo Salamone of Lynnfield. Devoted sister of Pat (Hynes) Bakey of San Diego, CA, Helen (Hynes) Grotz of Harwich, MA and the late Thomas and Joseph Hynes. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Kelly and John Mitchell, Kristine Spencer, James Castrucci, Nikki Oteri, Matthew Shuttleworth, Katie Sogolow and Brenna Murphy, 4 great grandchildren Kailey and Mason Allen, Landon & Teagan Mitchell and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was born in Somerville, MA, and grew up on Rose Street in Somerville. After graduating from St. Joseph’s School, class of 1949, Mary went on to attend Burdett College in Boston. Mary met Tom (whom she lovingly called “Mike” as an inside joke) in 1956, they wed in 1958, and together, they had six children. Mary was a truly altruistic woman, and her selflessness extended far beyond her husband and children, to her siblings, nieces, nephews, friends, friends of her children, and so on…the list is unending. Mary’s gift was making each and every person who was lucky enough to cross her path feel important, special and truly welcomed into her world as her family.
Mary loved the ocean, and enjoyed her summers at her home in Chatham. Whether she was sitting at the beach watching the kids play, chatting with her beloved sisters (physical distance had no impact on their bond) or sitting in her yard welcoming the never-ending stream of family and friends who would come to visit, Mary’s time down the Cape was very special to her. Mary also enjoyed Irish music and good conversation. Mary could talk, but more importantly, she would listen. Mary was a woman of great strength, wisdom and faith, which she generously and happily imparted through her conversations, and by the way she lived her life.
There are many who will be eternally grateful for the love and support given to them by Mary and the role she played in their lives. Mary will be dearly missed.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Tuesday from 4-8pm.
