Mary G. Whelan, 81, of Wakefield, formerly of Saugus and Chelsea, died on Monday, October 17 at the Spaulding Hospital North Shore in Salem.
Born in Chelsea on May 16, 1930 she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Griffin) Swankowski.
Mary was raised in Chelsea and was a graduate of St. Rose High School in Chelsea, Class of 1948. She was a retired cafeteria worker at the Williams School in Chelsea.
Mary had lived in Saugus from 1970 to 1992 before moving to Wakefield.
She was the wife of the late Thomas J Whelan. She was the mother of Thomas J. Whelan Jr. and Colleen King of Framingham, and Deborah A. Alphonse and her husband Michael of Wakefield. She was the sister of Ann Wells of Newport, RI, and the late Joseph Swanson (Swankowski), and Gertrude Swanson (Swankowski). She was the grandmother of Michelle L. Ferguson, and Thomas M. Alphonse and the great grandmother of Brady T. Ferguson.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.
