Matthew Gerniglia , 101, a longtime resident of Saugus, died on Sunday June 23, at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

Born in the North End of Boston he was the son of the late Salvatore and Frances (Anzalone) Gerniglia .

Matthew was raised in the North End and moved to Saugus in the 1920s. He was a retired master plumber for the General Electric Co. of Lynn. He also worked for the L.B. Evans Shoe Co. of Wakefield for 50 years as a stitcher. Matthew enjoyed dancing and bowling and was an avid Bruins fan.

Matthew was the husband of the late Marion (Malonson) Gerniglia . He was the father of Lorraine Gerniglia of Danvers, Frances Testa and her husband Richard of Wakefield, and the late Barbara Gerniglia . He was the brother of the late Joseph and John Gerniglia , and Mary Spadafora. He was the grandfather of Richard M. Testa of Lynnfield and Sheri Prosperi and her husband Lou of Wakefield and the great grandfather of Nathan and Samantha Prosperi. Matthew was proceded in death by his companion Eleanor Reppucci.

A Funeral service will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Thursday at 11 a.m. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.
