Maurice Cormier

Maurice J . Cormier passed away peacefully at his home late Sunday evening surrounded by family.

He was born in Somerville on Sept. 14, 1925 to Philip and Ella (Poirier) Cormier .

He was raised in Somerville and Malden, leaving high school early to enlist in the US Navy during WWII. He served as Electrician's Mate, First Class, aboard the USS LSM-12 and the LSM-13. Upon his return, he completed his high school studies, and went on to receive a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. He worked for several Boston engineering firms, including Metcalf & Eddy and Chas. T. Main.

Mr. Cormier resided in Stoneham since 1956 where he raised his family and was a devoted member of St. Patrick Church. He had a natural athletic ability and was a fierce competitor on both the tennis and badminton court. He pursued his many interests and hobbies with a great deal of enthusiasm and perseverance, including vegetable gardening, woodworking, cooking and sailing. He contributed many weekend hours, over the course of 9 years, working alongside his brother-in-law Fred Grant of Scituate, assisting in the building of a 36-ft. sailing vessel, aptly named "The Challenge".

After his retirement, Maurice and his wife, Marjorie, enjoyed traveling together, taking tours throughout the US and Europe. He especially enjoyed taking annual reunion trips around New England with his many brothers and sisters-in-law.

He accomplished much in his 85 years, but he was most proud of his role as husband and father.

He was happily married for 56 years to Marjorie M. (Grant) Cormier and devoted father to Richard A. Cormier and his wife Deborah of Ohio, Anne T. McGinn and her husband Harold of Stoneham, Joan M. Cormier of Somerville, Paul M. Cormier and his wife Lisa of Reading, Mary E. West and her husband David of Wakefield, Carol A. Petraglia and her husband Eugene of New Jersey, and Linda R. Brandon and her husband French of Ipswich. He was predeceased by his only brother, Ernest Cormier of Malden. He was the proud grandfather of Chad and Kyle Cormier , Benjamin and Gina Petraglia, Joshua West and Ivy Cormier .

His funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church at 10 o'clock. A period of visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
