Michael J. Burke, age 59, a lifelong Stoneham resident, died Wednesday, January 2 at his residence.
Born in Cambridge on March 28, 1959 he was the beloved son of the late John J. and Marie F. (McCarthy) Burke.
Mike was raised in Stoneham and attended Stoneham High School, where in 1975 he led the hockey team deep into the state tournament before transferring and ultimately graduating from Malden Catholic High School, where he was named MVP of the hockey team in 1977. Following high school graduation, Mike enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country. When he returned home, he attended Framingham State University, received his bachelor's degree, and revived his hockey career as a member of the Ram's hockey team. He worked as a Supervisor for the United States Postal Service and was able to keep his passion for hockey alive by playing on the Boston Americans, the first American team to win the International Postal Hockey Tournament. Mike was all-tournament goalie and MVP. Michael loved to play golf and travel with his friends and especially enjoyed time spent on the Cape. His greatest pleasure was time with his family and attending his nieces and nephews sporting events, where a win just didn't seem like a win if "Uncle Mike" wasn't there.
He was the loving brother of John J. Burke, Jr. of Woburn, Stephen P. Burke and his wife Lisa of South Barrington, IL, and Maureen A. Burke and her husband Sean Cashell of Winchester. He was the devoted uncle to Kerry, Brian, Connor, Caitlin, Sean and Michael; and the great uncle to Timothy and Oliver. He was the nephew of Charlie McCarthy of Somerville and Peggy (Burke) Wackrow of Woburn. He is also survived by his cousin Tony Burke of Co. Westmeath, Ireland and countless friends.
His Funeral will be held from the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main St., Stoneham on Monday at 8am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham at 9am. Interment, Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham. Visitation for relatives and friends at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 1-4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
